    Denbighshire 2001

    Gold Medal for Fine Art

Philip Nicol is based in Cardiff. For many years he was a lecturer in fine art in a number of  UK art schools. He was an artist in residence in Stuttgart and was included in the British Art Show, a national survey of British art. He has been the recipient of a number of prizes and has exhibited widely, both in the UK and further afield.

His work is in numerous private collections as well as, amongst others, the following public bodies: The Contemporary Art Society of Wales, Newport Museum and Art Gallery, The National Assembly of Wales, The National Museum of Wales (Derek Williams Trust Purchase), The Southern Arts Collection, Cardiff County Council, Glyn Vivian Museum, Swansea, Slovak National Museum, Czechoslovakia,  University of Glamorgan and Leeds College of Art & Design.

My prime concern lies in a condition of light and the tension of passing time. The paintings are 'fixed' in a perpetual state of suspension. Time is stretched, natural light dies and electric light is switched on. All makes for a sense of unease and anxiety. A fine line is drawn between the moment and the monument. The paintings arise from the world I know. Side streets seen, urban 'pockets' glimpsed, places that exist 'out of hours'. Experience itself is a construct and the remaking of experience into painting is certainly so. I bring a lot of ghosts to bear on both. Film Noir, crime fiction and, of course, many other painters. I aim to delight, disquiet and astound. I want these paintings to reverberate and resound into other people's experience, reminding them of what they know and have not yet seen.
