    Jwg (Jug)
Paint, handstitching and appliqué on fabric
    100 x 160cm 1985

'Jwg' ('Jug') was created in my Manchester studio in 1985, soon after my Mother died and was a way of coming to terms with my loss and making sense of the thoughts in my mind at that time.
Using handstitching and appliqué techniques, shapes drift across, and the memory of things pass through, as transient as fingermarks on a steamy window.

It is half dreamscape but hinges on the outline of an old enamel water jug, a familiar object from the studio. It is full of opposites - absence and presence, negative and positive and there is a sense of distance and fading away. On the right is a stylized hayfield as seen through my mind's eye, the Mid Wales landscape I was longing to return to.

In the 1987 National Eisteddfod of Wales, Porthmadog, 'Jwg' ('Jug') was awarded the Craft Masterpiece Gold Medal with selectors Jean Muir, Stephen Bayley and Derrick E Turner commenting:

"She has a genuinely original eye, and an impressive range of technical competence. The general impression of her work was outstanding. We hope that the award of the prize will encourage the development of a remarkable talent
