Annie Morgan Suganami
"I cannot imagine my life without being able to make paintings of people. Since I first started painting people, whether from observation or imagined, I have always and continue to paint characters that emanate perseverance, tenacity, honesty and kindness. They are my personal icons of endurance in these increasingly uncertain times"
Annie Morgan Suganami is a Welsh artist and musician based in Machynlleth, Wales. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music and Cardiff School of Art & Design, her dual disciplines inform each other through shared notions of rhythm, composition, and improvisation. Her paintings, rich and fluid, are continually reworked-layers built, rubbed back, and renewed-creating complex tonal harmonies akin to musical phrasing. Confident brushwork gives rise to shoulders, folds and faces that feel immediate and alive. Neon flashes and strong outlines heighten the emotional resonance of her figures, whose gestures and gazes reveal the subtleties of human experience. Annie's ongoing dialogue between precision and spontaneity allows each painting to unfold like a piece of music-lively, expressive, and deeply attuned to the poetry of human presence. Annie exhibits regularly at TEN Cardiff, owned by Cat Gardiner, who has curated this month's exhibiton for Canfas.
