Deirdre McKenna

Bywgraffiad
“I use a variety of techniques to create marks and lines on copper plates, including hard ground, aquatint, sugar lift and more. These techniques are often repeated over and over to produce the final image.”

Deirdre McKenna is an Irish artist whose practice spans painting, printmaking, and various contemporary artforms. Growing up on Ireland’s western coast, she has always drawn inspiration from the sea, recognising its deep significance in shaping both history and culture. The enduring connection between people and the ocean remains a continual source of fascination for her. She has received multiple bursaries and residencies, including the international Celtic Neighbours residency at MOMA Machynlleth, Wales. During her time there, she developed a deep interest in Welsh culture and traditions, finding inspiration in their enduring presence. Drawing parallels between Irish and Welsh cultural practices, McKenna aims to further expand her exploration of these shared traditions, fascinated by how they continue to resonate in today’s modern world.
