Rob Preston
"My inspiration comes from the wonderment of life; who and what we are."
Working in bronze and slate, Rob celebrates the beauty in nature, from the simplest observation of a water droplet to the greatest question of all: where do we come from, and where do we go?
Ideas can arrive from the simplest observations — the graceful movement of a bough swaying in the breeze. His work Lunar Wave exalts the influence of the moon across the four seasons: the ocean's master, from the changing colours of autumn leaves to the rebirth of nature in spring.
Rob finds particular inspiration in Denis Mitchell, Paul Mount, and Barbara Hepworth — their honesty, elegance, and purity of form. Art and engineering are twin passions; where engineering is structured and precise, art offers him free rein to gaze at life. After taking redundancy from the steelworks in Port Talbot, entirely self-taught, his approach is simple: if others can pursue their dreams, so can he.
