Matt Williams

Biography

“I cherish the wonder in the inconspicuous - the sinuous sweep of grasses in the wind, the enigmatic shadows of winter light on melting snow.”

Matthew Williams’ work connects the beauty of the Welsh landscape with the lived experience of being Welsh. Drawing on a lineage of Welsh farming, he maintains a visceral, sensory relationship to land, where colour, structure, and atmosphere register as both emotional and physical experiences. Working mainly in oils, he explores both the visible and emotional landscapes of Wales, shaped by its history and culture.  Drawn to themes of loss and identity—lost heritage, language, and land—Matthew sees the landscape as singing of these collective experiences, which he transforms into form and story.  And in his paintings of historic interiors Matthew exquisitely captures moments in time with the same technical mastery where light, matter, and traces of inhabitants perform together, inviting viewers to contemplate how place records and refracts cultural experience.
