"My hope is that the craftworks feel like an invitation to connect; touch, hold, smell and sit."
Apphia is a Welsh craftswoman whose practice encompasses, placemaking, analog photography, small metalsmith vernacular jewellery and most recently heritage grasswork baskets and furniture.
Her craftwork examines the relationship between natural materials, place, its people and their cultural traditions, with a particular interest in island cultures and making from found and foraged resources— and her self-coined phrase ”making for lack” which describes the innate impulse to make in response to necessity.
Apphia is one half of the craft-duo Ferguson-Ross Studio, where she works alongside her husband across various craft practices. Their recent collaborative work centres on heritage craft practices of grass woven furniture, such as lipwork and straw-back chair making.
