Dawn Fincham
Biography
“Combining my graphic design skills and art together has opened my world and helped me visualise what’s in my head and make it a reality.”
Dawn morphs vintage engravings with digital graphics and photography to create layered interpretations of the world around her. She sources imagery from old engraving books, charity shop finds, and countless stock photographs, selecting characters with attitude and charisma—people you might like to meet down the pub. Once printed onto canvas, she reworks each piece with acrylics, inks, glitter, and mixed media to build vibrant surfaces and evolving narratives. Her surreal, compact landscapes and bold colour palettes invite viewers to look closer and discover new meanings. Often beginning with her chosen characters and a loose idea, her work develops fluidly. Recently inspired by Renaissance portraiture, her latest series playfully reimagines portraits as onlookers and guests at her own wedding. In 2025, Dawn was recognised as a “Highly Commended Artist” in the VAA Artist of the Year Awards.
